THE HALIFAX ACADEMY
CLIENT: Calderdale Council
LOCATION: Halifax, West Yorkshire
VALUE: £4.5 million
NOVO were approached by AHR (Leeds) architects to carry out the Mechanical, Electrical and Public Health (MEP) services design for the new-build 2 form entry primary school in Halifax.
The new building school is to achieve BREEAM “Excellent”. NOVO employed the BREEAM assessor to carry out the BREEAM role, from one our project partners with whom we regularly collaborate.
Both for BREEAM and BB101 compliance, the building has been thermally modelled to assess the overheating criteria and to ensure that the energy rating for the project is as low as can be afforded by the local authority, Calderdale MBC.

As a result, the school has now the following energy saving measures:

•Low u-values to reduce heat losses
•Air Permeability of 5 is targeted
•Photovoltaic roof panels
•Major and minor leak detection for BREEAM
•High efficiency lighting with efficacy in excess of 55 Watts/lumen
•Presence, absence a daylight lighting control
•High efficiency condensing boilers
•Rainwater harvesting scheme
All of these items and more are being provided to provide Calderdale Council with a modern, fresh educational facility to meet the demands of the local community.
